Windward Monopole Pinot Noir Vertical Tasting (2006, 2007, and 2008)

Our friends Ethan and Erin were down from San Francisco, and picked us up a little something from a great winery: Windward.  We all visited Windward in May of last year at the end of our wine tasting day.  We were all a little drunk at this point, but it didn’t stop us from charming Dustin Hoffman Marc Goldberg into sharing some of his “secret stash”.  Ok, so maybe being drunk helped…  Anyway, the grapes, he claimed, were picked by him (in the nude in the moonlight) in the wee hours of the morning before harvest day.

I want to be a winemaker so freaking hard.  But I digress.

Anyway, we tried their three Monopole Pinot Noirs (2006 thru 2008), and I picked up the 2007 and 2008 while I was there.  Our lovely friends made a detour on their trip down, and grabbed the 2006 Monopole.  Vertical ahoy!

Original notes:

2006: Very smooth and balanced, slight orange

2007: Grassy, earthy nose, smoother mid, tannic with slight cherry notes

2008: Strawberry nose, light, smoke at end

New notes:

2006: Rhubarb to dried berries in nose, very dry mouth, black pepper, slightly grassy

2007: Mud and manure to icy mud in nose, extremely smooth, tannins at very end, very earthy (definitely the favorite of the night)

2008: Butter, dark berry, strawberry, slight licorice, grassy with a slight cherry note
